"Erfinder und Erfindungen"
What do a telephone and mascara have in common? Both can be seen in the new Dietmar Kainrath exhibition, which opens on 9 July 2015 in Hangar-7 in Salzburg. In this exhibition, the Tyrolean caricaturist addresses humanity's inventions, both great and small.
As quirky and formidable as ever, Kainrath presents his work at this, his sixth exhibition in Hangar-7, under the title "Dietmar Kainrath – Erfinder und Erfindungen", and he has included a number of surprises. His works therefore place earth-shattering achievements, such as Gutenberg's printing press, under the spotlight alongside comparably small, but no less effective ideas such as curlers or the paper clip.
Ink pens, a fine brush and sparing use of watercolours are Kainrath's trademark and result in his distinctive drawing style. And no exhibition of his caricatures would be complete without his simplistic sketches of cans drawn free hand that can be recognised from the Red Bulletin. These take on the role of compère – sometimes acting as a quiet observer, and sometimes offering cheeky comments – guiding you through the individual works and representing the common thread running through the various inventions from across the centuries.
Dietmar Kainrath's exhibition "Erfinder und Erfindungen" consolidates the wide world of science in an extremely witty way and succeeds in entertaining visitors with its vast array of exhibits.
About the artist: Dietmar Kainrath
Dietmar Kainrath was born in Innsbruck on 8 September 1942 and initially attended art school. However, the passion that he exhibited for caricatures early on gave way to his lust for life. He spent a few years in various major cities across Europe doing a variety of jobs, including working at a circus in Germany. After returning to Innsbruck, and following the birth of his son, his plans for the future changed and he began working as a freelance commercial artist. It wasn't until the end of the 1970s that he began to make a career out of his real passion - caricatures. Today Kainrath works in Tyrol, where he lives with his wife Verena.
The artist has become well known through numerous exhibitions in Austria, Germany and the USA. Amongst his most popular sketches are 60 caricatures from the Charles Bukowski film, "Barfly". The independent artist's first exhibition, on the subject of alcohol, took place in 1979. Though he still had plenty of design orders to fulfil, the number of companies that appreciated his art continued to grow. He went on to produce drawings for Porsche, Mercedes, Austrian Airlines, Weltwoche, Penthouse and Playboy. His caricatures on the subject of Tyrol, justice, politics, addiction and sport have appeared in many national and international publications.
Dietmar Kainrath's role models include Romanian-American illustrator and caricaturist Saul Steinberg, French graphic artist and writer Tomi Ungerer, and Paul Flora. More recently, he has worked as a caricaturist for the magazine The Red Bulletin.
From July 9 to mid-September 2015.
