Photo exhibition at Red Bull's Hangar-7:

Rainer W. Schlegelmilch "The Golden Age of Car Racing"

He is the eye of Formula 1 and among the most important photographers and chroniclers in the world of motorsports. With his unusual intuition for the right instant, the light, the surroundings, the beauty and the dynamics of the moment, his photos become unmistakable, artistic and historical picture compositions.

Rainer W. Schlegelmilch's career as a motorsports photographer began in 1962, when a friend took him along to the 1000-km race at the Nürburgring. Back then, the men in the cockpit were aged between 30 and 50, and they raced around the circuit wearing open helmets and polo shirts. It was the era of the economic miracle, the VW Beetle and the first holidays to Italy, and Rainer had just finished his course at the Bavarian State Institute for Photography in Munich. He has been passionate about motorsports ever since.

Rainer opened a studio for advertising photography in Frankfurt, but his main passion remained the Formula 1 Grand Prix, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Targa Florio and many other car races. Rainer has taken photos for renowned publications such as "Auto, Motor und Sport", "Powerslide", "Sports Car Graphic", "Car & Driver", "Road & Track" and "Auto Revue". Until 1969, only in black and white. Since 1970 he has dedicated himself fully to colour photography and went digital in 2004. With around 15,000 black-and-white negatives and more than 400,000 slides and digital files, he is the proud owner of one of the biggest archives on the motorsports scene.

Over a period of 53 years, Rainer has photographed almost 600 Grand Prix. During his photography career, he has experienced the drivers' victories and defeats up close, met some of the biggest names in motorsports, and captured the highs and lows on film before, during and after the race. Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone awarded him a permanent Formula 1 pass for his work.

In his latest exhibition, entitled "THE GOLDEN AGE OF CAR RACING", Rainer W. Schlegelmilch is presenting a retrospective of fascinating photos from the very beginnings of motorsports, when races were not yet won by the engineering arms race of the teams but mainly by the skill of the drivers. It was the defining era of motorsports, and the beginning of the quest for perfect technology, elegance and design. Rainer portrays some of the sport's greatest protagonists in his exhibition, including courageous gentlemen like Jim Clark, Jacky Ickx, Jackie Stewart and Bruce McLaren, as well as their teams. Motor racing was very risky at the time, as the vehicles were still just fragile tubular frame cages on thin wheels, and the circuits were made up of urban roads not suited for high speeds. You can almost smell the burning rubber and hear the engines roar when viewing his black-and-white pictures.
