The Magic of the Moment:

70 Years of Sports Photography by Magnum

The Red Bulletin celebrates 70 years of sports photography by Magnum Photos with a global special section in the May edition and an exhibition at Hangar-7.

The international active lifestyle magazine for men, The Red Bulletin, will soon be working with Magnum, the world’s most successful photographic agency. The May edition of the magazine will showcase a selection of the best Magnum sports photographs from the last 70 years. These pictures will also be on display in a photo exhibition at Hangar-7 in Salzburg from April 5 to May 1, 2017.

Seventy years ago, photographers Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, William Vandivert, George Rodger and David ‘Chim’ Seymour set up a photographic agency in New York over lunch at the Museum of Modern Art. As a large bottle of champagne had played its part, the agency was named Magnum.

“Thanks to its strict quality criteria and highly creative members, Magnum set a benchmark in all areas of press photography. We are proud that Magnum and The Red Bulletin will now work together more closely. We will begin our partnership with a unique spread in the magazine and the exhibition – 70 Years of Sports Photography by Magnum – at Hangar-7,” says Robert Sperl, Editorial Director of The Red Bulletin.

The exhibition, “70 Years of Sports Photography by Magnum”, runs from April 5 to May 1 at the architecturally unique Hangar-7 in Salzburg. Entry is free. It forms part of the celebrations marking the agency’s anniversary. In keeping with the spirit of visual storytelling, The Red Bulletin will showcase more than 40 select sporting images from Magnum’s unique contribution to photography. The selection of Magnum photographs includes iconic images of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Muhammad Ali, of Niki Lauda and Michael Schumacher, of Marilyn Monroe – pumping iron at the gym – and celebrating football world champion Diego Maradonna. Also on display is a portrait of Toni Sailer, which was shot by Viennese photographer Erich Lessing in 1958, at the skiing world championships in Bad Gastein. Lessing, born in 1923, is the oldest living Magnum photographer – and currently the only Austrian on the list of contributors.

“As Magnum Photos marks 70 years of witnessing history in 2017, it’s a great pleasure to collaborate with The Red Bulletin magazine in a celebration of the agency’s historic sporting photos that capture man’s physical prowess, dogged determination in the face of competition and sheer joy,” says Francesca Sears, Content Director of Magnum Photos.
