HangART-7 Edition 10: France
"Délicatesse des couleurs"
One of the biggest countries in Europe, with over 60 million inhabitants, defines itself essentially as a cultural nation with the cultural metropolis of Paris. Identity and cultural self-image are also vigorously defended within the European Union and through policy measures.
The Louvre in Paris is among the most famous museums world wide and is only one place among many that calls France to mind as a land of the arts.
In contrast, in recent years contemporary French painting has not been an issue internationally. Not even when a painting boom took place in most European countries in the 1990s. The current exhibition in Hangar-7 now shows 17 positions of recent French painting and thereby also movements that have only emerged recently.
A particular characteristic among some artists is the connection of narration and monochrome painting. “A technique I have never seen used in this way,” according to the curator and HangART-7 programme director Lioba Reddeker. This approach to colour also led to the choice of title:
“Délicatesse des couleurs”.
“Many artists are only now freeing themselves from the very powerful painting tradition of the past,” says the curator. And figurative painting is thus also an exciting and still little examined subject in France.
Works are being shown by:
Hugues Allamargot (*1979), Julien Beneyton (*1977), Benjamin Bruneau (*1974), Nina Childress (*1961), Sylvie Fajfrowska (*1959), Sylvie Fanchon (*1953), Sylvain Gelinotte (*1971), Suzanne Jalenques (*1976), Armand Jalut (*1976), Servane Mary (*1972), Olivier Masmonteil (*1973), Julie Polidoro (*1970), Loïc Raguénès (*1968), Emmanuel Régent (*1973), Florence Reymond (*1971), Anne-Laure Sacriste (*1970), Sélim Saiah (*1953).
