HangART-7 Edition 13: Italy
"Una forza del passato"
The paintings can be seen as being a mighty force from days gone by which is becoming stronger and stronger and yet which is continually changing. A new generation is seeking to exploit this force and is doing it very successfully.
It is no secret that there is a long history of painting in Italy. What is currently emerging from the artistic scene there is little known outside this country which shares our southern border.
If you think about regional differences then the eight exhibiting artists based in places ranging from South Tyrol to Sicily have the most diverse approaches to painting. With his works painted onto a deep black background Alessandro Ceresoli from Milan provides unusual insights into fantastic landscapes and ancient myths. The scenes presented by Gabriele Arruzzo are colorful and cartoon-like, and combine the archaic with the contemporary.
The overwhelmingly green landscapes by Valentina D’Amaro are infused with color. In Francesco Lauretta’s paintings both traditional symbols and tradition itself are unashamedly manipulated. Despite the different motifs and techniques used, the recurring themes have a distinctly Italian character: life and death, traditions and lifestyles – giving the impression of an ever spreading dialectic force.
The exhibition is called Una Forza Del Passato which is a lyrical quotation from the film-maker and writer Pier Paolo Pasolini who in so doing rooted his personality in the context of Italy’s past. The paintings can be seen as being a mighty force from days gone by which is becoming stronger and stronger and yet which is continually changing. A new generation is seeking to exploit this force and is doing it very successfully.
