HangART-7 Edition 14: Germany

"Paint Something German"

From 19 September until 15 November 2009 “Paint Something German” is showing ten new positions in contemporary art from Germany in the Salzburg Hangar-7.

Germany, a country with well over 20 state art universities and a particularly high density of museums and exhibition institutions, is the focus of the 14th HangART-7 exhibition.

It is not just the “New Leipzig School”, which rose to prominence since the mid 1990s with its most famous representative Neo Rauch, that has demonstrated the success story of figurative painting from Germany in the last 15 years. Every year, interesting, exciting and ambitious artists who are devoting themselves to the narratives as well as the essential questions of painting are coming out of numerous academies from Kiel to Munich.

In the 2007/08 winter term there were more than 77,000 students of art and art theory (by comparison there were 108,000 in human medicine and health in the same period): so with this number it is no easy task to discover the trends deserving of particular attention at the moment.

In view of the difficulties of the naturally limited curatorial access, in order to do justice to this great potential we concentrated our research on the tours and annual summer exhibitions of some art academies, and thereby sought out the centres of gravity for up-and-coming talent, supplemented by some artists who have completed their degrees within the last two to five years.

“With this selection of 10 artists from the academic years between 1966 and 1982 we are presenting a small cross section of the very latest art production, with all trends being marked by their high degree of independence and a serious search for painting solutions to very heterogeneous artistic questions”, says curator Lioba Reddeker.

Works are being shown by:

Gregor Gaida (*1975), Elke Graalfs (*1966), Nikola Irmer (*1970), Franziska Klotz (*1979), Gerit Koglin (*1974), Anna Krammig (*1981), Irma Markulin (*1982), Sibylle Springer (*1975), Johannes Vetter (*1979) und Nadine Wölk (*1979).
