Opening of the 19th HangART-7
"Tides of change"
Insights into the soul of the north: Ten up-and-coming artists carried visitors to the opening of the HangART-7 exhibition on 30 September 2011 away to the Baltic.
Foreign rule. Communism. Freedom. The face of the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania is one that is full of pain. On the one hand. On the other, these three countries have also always been an interface between cultures and economic systems – which saved them from one thing: becoming a cliché in themselves. And thus the faces of visitors to HangART-7 on the last day of September were marked primarily by curiosity. Which is the ideal background for an exhibition opening which is otherwise defined by the fact that the works play with the visitors' expectations. Will the works reflect the typical national characteristics, or will they perhaps deliberately flout them?
The brief film portraits of the artists increased everyone's keen anticipation of an extraordinary exhibition, since even here, it was clear that it would be impossible to put everything to follow into neat little boxes. "Refreshingly different", was one of the most frequent comments to be heard along the free floating walls showing the artists' works. The success of the evening was also due to the band, The Talisman Collection, which will soon be moving from being an insiders' tip to being classed as a 'top band', thanks to their melodic composition. What impression did the view of the Baltic adopted by the up and coming artists leave? That of a strong character. Defining, different. The three countries should prepare themselves for an onslaught of curious visitors. Many of them will come from Salzburg and the surrounding area.
