Edition Ikarus 2009

Great wines close to home

The right accompaniment is a must for the perfect dinner. That’s why we usually serve wine from our guest chefs’ homelands alongside their dishes here in the Ikarus restaurant.

But why only ever look far from home when exquisite wines can also be found close at hand? The Edition Ikarus range is dedicated to Austrian wines. Last year, the range consisted of one white and one red wine. This year, for the first time a sweet wine lines up as part of the selection and makes the erstwhile duo an exquisite trio. The Ikarus restaurant is delighted to present fine wines produced by three exceptional vintners. The selection of wines for the Ikarus range begins in the vineyard with the choice of grapes, continues throughout the winemaking process and extends to the barrelling and blending.

The result is a combination of peppery, sweet, spicy and zesty flavours – which find a home in 300 bottles each of the Ikarus White, Ikarus Red and Ikarus Sweet.

Ikarus White 2007 - Wachau

“You can only do something passionately if you devote all your energies to it – and this energy will be reflected by the wines,” says Leo Alzinger. Together with his wife Anna and son Leo junior, Leo Alzinger puts a great deal of hard work into creating first-class, natural wines against the magnificent natural backdrop of Austria’s Wachau region. The unique qualities of the vineyards located in the area from Loiben to Dürnstein furnish the very best conditions for Wachau’s eminent wine producers. Thanks to the (almost) perfect climate, 2007 counts among the most exquisite vintages and promises especially harmonious wines. The perfect balance between sun and rainfall, early vine blossom and a long growth period allowed for the optimum physiological ripening. Only the ripest grapes from Loiben’s primary rock sites were selectively harvested and then turned into wine with the greatest of care. The 2007 Ikarus White is a combination of enormous concentration and intensity, coupled with finesse and minerality, which lends this wine its incomparable character.

Ikarus Red 2006 - Burgenland

When a casino croupier trades in his chips for a vineyard, then he must either be very sure of himself or have an ace up his sleeve. In Roland Velich’s case, both things were true. With the Moric vineyard he has not only fulfilled his life’s dream, but also given Austrian red wine its regional identity back. Neckenmarkt is one of the traditional Blaufränkisch regions of Burgenland. The steep and mineral-rich offshoots of the Ödenburg Mountains lend his wines their distinctive flavour. The vines, some of which are 85 years old, provide the essence of the Ikarus Red. A strong mineral streak provides for a high aging potential and intensity, which gives the wine its unique character. The hints of blossoms and herbs and the delicate crispness that is a feature of the slate soil ensure that the wine has a perfect blend of spicy flavours. The 2006 vintage is the first Austrian wine to be awarded 95 points out of 100 by Robert Parker, the renowned wine critic. Velich’s Moric Blaufränkisch “Alte Reben Neckenmarkt” 2006 is an elegant red wine with cool aromas and plenty of fruit on the palate.

Ikarus Sweet 2005 - Jois/Neusiedler See

Burgenland is not only Martin Pasler’s homeland, but also home to some of Austria’s greatest wines. This vintner has taken on quite a job – after all, he wants his wines to be among the best in the world! Domestic and international awards have shown that he is on the right track and rank him among the very best vintners. There is a tradition of winemaking in the Pasler vineyard stretching back to the 17th century, and Martin Pasler is continuing this with his superb wines. The foundation of the best wines is careful work and natural techniques combined with perfect conditions. This region is home to grapes with an unmistakeable character, which are protected from the wind by the slopes of the Leithagebirge Mountains and which ripen in the heat-retaining microclimate of Lake Neusiedlersee. A selective harvest and strong reduction in yields guarantee first-class grapes. The Ikarus Sweet 2005 is a sweet wine with the outstanding style of a great “Trockenbeerenauslese” (the German name for sweet wine made from grapes shrivelled by noble rot). It is characterised by a fresh feel, like a young wine, and has the potential to last for the next 15 years.

Trockenbeerenauslese “Muskat Ottonel” 2005 from the Martin Pasler vineyard has an aroma of elderflowers and apricots, accompanied by a unique hint of honey.
