Siegfried "Blacky" Schwarz
The Flying Bulls' chief helicopter pilot
Sigi "Blacky" Schwarz is to the Flying Bulls' helicopters what Sigi Angerer is to winged aircraft – a living legend. Following his training with the Austrian Army, he flew rescue helicopters in the Alps, amongst other things. Blacky is the only Austrian to possess a helicopter aerobatics licence.
You can tell that Blacky was a rescue helicopter pilot – he is calm personified. A personality trait that is probably needed if you have to take a helicopter to within a few centimetres of a cliff, whilst being responsible for a winch man 20 metres below the helicopter on a wire.
Doing loop the loops in a helicopter? You certainly need nerves of steel for that, but to hear Blacky talk about it, you'd think he was talking about riding a bike to the baker's. This modesty is characteristic of the native of Graz. He never mentions that there are only a handful of civil pilots in the world who have mastered this manoeuvre (all of whom work for the Flying Bulls, by the way). Perhaps it is this very quality that gives even the most nervous passengers a feeling of absolute safety, whether looping the loop in a BO 105 or taking a high-speed turn in a Bell Cobra.
