Robert Rottensteiner

Yssilo - Parallele Welt

The fantastic images by Austrian artist Robert Rottensteiner appear in a book for young people for the first time.

In his science fiction debut for young readers aged 12 and above, the Carinthia-based Creative Director and illustrator has created an archaic parallel world full of strange wild creatures which is under threat of extinction. Robert Rottensteiner packs the adventurous plot into so many opulent, detailed and powerful images that the story of this novel could almost be told through images alone.

Max, Ali and Felis, the girl, find a strange key on the road with a kind of eye looking from it. On closer inspection, the youngsters realise that it is a computer which seems to be alive. The three friends name the key YMI (Why am I?) and consider how best to figure out its abilities. Suddenly, the key teleports them to a mystical world called Yssil.

In Yssil, Max, Ali and Felis find themselves caught in the midst of a battle which has raged for a century between the Yssilaners and the genetically modified warriors of the so-called imperial mother. But why are they here? Is there a task to solve? Can they perhaps bring the war to an end?

The three have no time to get their bearings: they are dragged away to a hostile island and are forced to watch as other prisoners are brutally killed in a pool of acid. But before it is their turn, chaos breaks out: a large swarm of insect-like creatures bearing lances attacks and in the turmoil, the three friends manage to escape. Once back among the Yssilaners, YMI takes them back home to the real world.

YSSILO is an adventure-packed science fiction novel. ROBERT ROTTENSTEINER’S expressive images transport the reader into the mythical parallel world of Yssil and transform the characters in the tale into lively storytellers. In addition to the exciting plot with its bizarre, peculiar and quirky creatures, the novel is also about a friendship which endures even the greatest of danger. Thanks to their experiences in the other world, Max, Ali and Felis become more mature and develop trust in the creatures which were previously completely alien to them.

Robert Rottensteiner:
