Steve McQueen – The Last Mile

Photography by Barbara McQueen

In the last years of his life, the actor and amateur racer Steve McQueen (1930-1980) was photographed in very private moments by his wife Barbara. The exhibition "Steve McQueen – The Last Mile", with carefully selected photographs, will be shown in Hangar-7 from the beginning of June 2013.

Steve McQueen – Actor and Icon „King of Cool“

Steve McQueen (1930-1980) is one of the greatest actors of all times. During the 1960s and 1970s he was a gigantic cinema magnet with blockbuster movies such as “The Magnificent Seven”, “Papillon”, “Bullitt”, “The Great Escape”, "Le Mans" and “Getaway”. He was also known to be an excellent race car pilot and passionate collector of Oldtimer cars and motorcycles. For the world Steve McQueen was the ultimate “King of Cool”. His spell and popularity are still unbroken and until today photos of him are used for worldwide advertising campaigns.

Barbara McQueen - Photographer

Barbara Minty was 24 and a successful fashion model when she met Steve McQueen in 1977 to marry the 23 year older actor in 1980, the year of his death. During their 3,5 year relationship Barbara and Steve lived most of the time away from the limelight. She was the only one allowed to take private pictures of her husband.

The unique and private documentation of their 3,5 year relationship and marriage showcases the to the public unknown private Steve McQueen, sometimes being the “King of Uncool” and most of all “The Last Mile” of his life. It took Barbara McQueen 25 years before she was able to review the many pictures she took and deal with the death of her beloved husband. In 2007 she published a book with stories and photos about their life together in the US.
