"Una Excursión Mexicana"
In its third year, HangART-7 is celebrating its first anniversary: the seventh exhibition opening on 07.07.2007 – and on the occasion of this celebration is making an excursion to Mexico in order to invite seven artists to Salzburg for the big summer exhibition.
“The world has the Mexican soil to thank for maize, its great source of nutrition (only rice is greater),” says the legendary Egon Erwin Kisch in the introduction to his 1945 volume of reportage Discoveries in Mexico.
More than 60 years later, after a perception of Mexico that in the 90s for those active in the cultural field was characterised among other things by sympathy for the Zapatista movement, a radical change of course can be seen in the country, above all intended to overcome economic isolation and open up the market. After the election and vote-counting nail-biter in 2006, the young conservative candidate Felipe Calderón won the race and gave a fresh economic impetus, which not least is having an immense effect on current art in Mexico and on its visibility.
The contemporary art fair MACO (México Arte Contemporáneo), initiated in 2004, proves once again that Mexico is the art centre of Central America, because – as the Neue Zürcher Zeitung wrote a year ago – “Where there is an art fair there must be art collectors – one can admire a potent collection with contemporary art in the JUMEX factory at the gateway to the city.
